Character Name: Elka
Character Canon: Unsounded (Webcomic)
History: Pretty barebones, but here is the Unsounded wiki and Elka's entry within it.
Let me know if you want more.
AU History: Elka's family has always been closely tied to the Calderan military, and she is no exception. Though she wants to eventually get to the Steel Battalion, she currently hasn't worked up to it yet, and is trying to get the right as a lieutenant in the Rock Legion. During peace time, her job is to patrol Caldera's lands and make hunt down trouble makers. During war times, she becomes the leader of a squad of militia and makes sure they don't trip and impale themselves on their own swords (Her words. Caldera's militia is apparently quite capable, but she thinks it's a bad idea to let them get big headed.).
She was involved (on the sidelines) in the liberation of Sanctuary, and has since been part of the forces that are making sure Gigas is really leaving, that the Magi aren't building an army of zombies, or that bandits don't start getting any ideas. She doesn't like it there, though, and would love to go back home.
Canon Personality: There are Elkas in most militaries around the world. She's a career soldier who is fiercely loyal to her friends and her country, she's kind of a bully to people who she can make squirm, and she has a relentlessly practical head on her shoulders. She is not a complex person, given to deep philosophizing. She knows what she wants and she goes after it with straightforwards dedication and planning. When you look at Elka, what you see is what you get.
She joined the army because her family has a strong military tradition. Her goal is to join the royal guard, which is not an easy task. She has set herself to this goal with practical planning, and is on the right path. She's probably about equally interested in the honor of serving the queen as she is in the cushy benefits of such a high posting. Having an important job is all well and good, but it doesn't amount to much if you don't get good pay or have to spend too many night sleeping in the woods.
She is a good friend to have in a sticky situation. She thinks quickly on her feet and is generally fiercely loyal to her friends and allies. Even when in murky waters of questionable ethics, Elka is not the type to hesitate. She knows what she believes in and sticks with it. If she has a flaw, it's that she takes loyalty too far rather than not far enough, sometimes being willing to overlook it when her friends might not be doing the right thing.
That said, it's a good thing she's so loyal and dependable, because Elka can be an intensely irritating person. Her sense of humor is immature at best and not suited for polite company. She won't hesitate to bully people into getting her what she wants. Sometimes she even does it just for fun. She doesn't want to seriously upset people, usually, but she likes to see them squirm a little bit. Perhaps "tease" is a better word.
To Elka, magic is not a passion or a mystery to be explored. It is a skill that she learned because she never wants to be at a disadvantage. When she realized she had a talent for it, she set to learning it with the same dogged efficiency that she set to learning all the other aspects of the soldier's trade. She is fond of using it to warp the battlefield, doing shit like borrowing the liquid aspect out of water and using it on stone to destroy the ground, or removing the stability of floors and walls to make escape routes and traps.
She has a fierce patriotic streak and truly believes that Cresce, her homeland, is the finest nation in the world. Cresce has a weird, magical communist government that does a pretty good job at keeping its citizens comfortable, but also demands a lot of work from them, and it is a system that Elka fully believes in. She is prepared to do what it takes to help Cresce, and gets irritated when other people will not. Selfishness is the quickest way to earn Elka's contempt.
AU Deviation: Elka buys heavily into the national ideals of her homeland. In Cresce, this was working hard for the good of the group, self sacrifice, and diligence against outside threats. In Caldera, it sounds more like the national ideals involve personal strength and integrity, as well as trusting and supporting your countrymen. The end result is a slight shift in her personal ideals away from self sacrifice and towards being a badass Calderan.
Canon Abilities: Elka is a Spellwright, Unsounded's version of magic users. Spellery involves isolating aspects of your environment and moving them around. Wrights can do things like condense the heat out of the air to make a fireball, steal the sharpness from a sword to make a phantom blade of their own, borrow the strength of an animal, trade the momentum of two objects in motion, borrow the color from a painting, or just about anything else a clever wright can come up with.
There ARE a few limitations for spellwrights. First they need to be able to speak, and any other spellwright can tell what you're about to do by listening to what you say (Spell incantations normally translate to sounding like "move the aspect of voice from the elephant fourteen paces to my left into my voice." They are literal instructions, just in a magical language. Some wrights do not need to speak and can do it all with hand gestures, but this is a rare ability. Elka does not have it.). Second there are certain materials called 'First' material (First Iron, First silver, First Stone, etc.) that cannot be effected by spellery. And third, anything you change with spells will undo itself in relatively short order without a spell focus made of first materials.
Enlightened Abilities: Normal monotype master of Trading. Elka can switch the strength, toughness, speed, voice, or color of her pokemon between them or herself. Once she evolves she'll also be able to switch some aspects of objects around her. Specifically: Color, flexibility, and durability.
Examples of things she could do:
- Making an escape route by making a wall as weak as a sheet of paper
- Making an impromptu weapon by stealing the hardness from a metal desk and applying it to a ruler
- Tying a sword in a knot by making it as flexible as rope
Things she could NOT do:
- Ruin someone's weapon while it's in their hand
- Directly effect any object a person is carrying or wearing
- Steal aspects from any unwilling subject
- Maintain more than two of these effects at a time
- Have any switch last for more than a few seconds after she stops concentrating on it
Her weapons of choice is a truncheon.
Starter Pokémon: Male Growlithe named Champion (she calls him Champ most of the time)
Notes/Special Considerations: That blue thing is a hair ornament, not actually dyed hair.
SAMPLES
First-Person: Testdrive thread and another testdrive thread
Third-Person: Did questions instead.
-What do you seek for humanity’s future?
Pfft. Don't ask me big questions like that. I'm small time. I just want to have some fun and do my job until I can collect my pension and retire fat and happy.
-To what lengths would you go to rescue your allies if they were lost in the wilderness?
If I could, I'd damn well go out there myself. If I couldn't, there'd be a damn good reason for it.
-What aspects and traits do you respect most in your individual fellow man?
Personal integrity, strength, reliability in a crisis.
-What do you look for in the Pokémon with whom you bond?
Pretty much the same.
-You are alone and bereft of your Pokémon allies; upon what strengths do you rely on to see yourself safely home?
My personal skill, my spellery, and my ~charm~.
-You plunge into the depths of ruins of an ancient civilization. What is it that you seek from the past? Treasure, technology, wisdom?
Oh hella the treasure. That shit's going towards my retirement. And maybe a few nights on the town.
-In your eyes, what is absolutely unforgivable?
Abandoning your duty to your friends, your family, or your country.
-No Enlightened chooses their abilities - and not all are Enlightened. What type abilities would you most desire to manifest and why?
Lotta enlightened can shrug off hits that would kill me where I stood. Combat's dangerous, and I wish I was a little less fragile.
